OCTOBER FEATURE: David Archer
If you’re in Haida Gwaii and listen to the CBC Daybreak North radio show, you may have heard David Archer’s piece for orchestra called “Trees on a Wire.” David is a composer, pianist, and writer based in Daajing Giids. His musical career includes composing music for many choirs, instrumentalists, and video projects. He also spent a few years playing lounge music in a fancy Victoria hotel.
These days, David is in Haida Gwaii recording original music for piano and biosphere. This music features his recordings of the natural environment. Honesty, empathy, and climate action are important threads through David’s creative work. In his off time, he is often in the forest on a soundwalk, sipping coffee behind a sci-fi novel, or watching the Toronto Raptors. Find his music at www.DavidArcher.net.
OCTOBER FEATURE: Old's Cool
We thank the Jay and the Arts Council for their support in this project. It was fun for sure! :) We joined together 3 of Roly's original songs which happened to fit together theme-wise, and the result was this medley.
Both Charley and Roly have been involved in setting up their own recording equipment at home so that they can continue making little videos and audios such as this. The inspiration for all of this came from a collaborative home recording that Charley and Roly made last February to commemorate the memory of my old friend, Canadian singer-songwriter Willie P. Bennett, the result of which is posted on YouTube.
We are hoping that the future will include more of these audio/video collaborative projects, and to extend our range to include musical friends from off-island locations. We are also looking forward to playing more actual live gigs locally on Haida Gwaii. Looking forward to the virtual coffee house coming up, and for the return of the live coffee house soon in the future!
